Non-biliary complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a study of 2189 cases.

Objective: To calculate the frequency of non-biliary complications encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Material & Methods: This prospective study conducted our the period of 05 years, at Chandka Medical College Hospital Larkana, included all the patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, after taking informed, written consent for being included in the study. Results: Total 2189 patients were included pain in RHC was the leading symptom in most of our patients ( 83.01%). Frequency of access related injuries was: port site bleeding in 51(2.32%), small bowl laceration in 04(0.18%), small bowel perforation in 05(0.22%), subcutaneous emphysema at port site in 131(5.98%). Frequency of procedure related complications was: subcapsular haematoma in 03 (0.13%), duodenal perforation in 08 (0.36%). Non-biliary complications may be encountered while accessing the peritoneal cavity or during the procedure. These can be avoided by adopting open method for creating pneumoperitoneum and careful dissection.
