Metabolic syndrome in patients with diabetic chronic kidney disease.

Objectives: To find the frequency of metabolic syndrome among patients with chronic kidney disease secondary to type 2 diabetes mellitus, attending Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Methodology: This is a cross sectional study conducted at Department of Medicine, Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur from January 2007 to December 2008. Three hundred patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus with CKD (stage 2 - 4) were included through convenience sampling. All patients had their general physical examination including measurement of blood pressure, weight, height, abdominal girth and systemic examination. Their fasting and random plasma glucose levels, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels were measured. The data was analyzed to find the frequency of metabolic syndrome. Results: Out of 300 patients (171 males and 129 females), 70% had metabolic syndrome. Abdominal obesity was present in 69% patients. Hypertension was present in 46% patients. Low HDL levels were present in 62% patients. Fifty two percent patients had elevated levels of triglycerides. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome is common among patients with CKD secondary to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
