Infect Dis J Jan ;10(1):9-10.

General Medical Practitioners of District Badin, Pakistan Objective: To estimate the prevalence and identification of the factors associated with inappropriate injection practices by general medical practitioners (GPs) of district Badin, Pakistan during 1998. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 159 GPs of district Badin. A pre-designed questionnaire was administered to collect data on factors hypothesized for their association with inappropriate injection practices. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed. Results: Of 159 GPs, 151 (95%) were found to be prescribing injections inappropriately. On bivariate analysis, the nearest health facility (p = 0.03), type of health facility (p = 0.05) and type of practice (p = 0.05) were found to be associated with inappropriate injection practices. Recommendations: Keeping in view the extremely high prevalence of inappropriate injection practices, it is strongly recommended that health education of masses as well as GPs should be done to create awareness about hazards of injection practices. Moreover, the government should initiate and implement regulations for curtailing injection malpractices.
