Factors affecting Tetanus Mortality in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Pakistan.

Tetanus is a life threatening infectious disease. Few studies have looked at the current epidemiological pattern in Pakistan. This study describes the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and outcome of 42 cases of tetanus at Liaquat National Hospital. No patient had a complete immunization record. Only 48% of patients had a prior history of injury. The most common symptom at presentation was trismus. Most patients suffered from grade II tetanus. 27% of patients received ventilatory support. 17% suffered from autonomic dysfunction. Mortality from tetanus was 39%. Factors affecting mortality include grade of tetanus, respiratory distress and autonomic dysfunction.
