Ureteroscopy: New Therapeutic Indications.
Biomedica Jan ;16:66-70.

This study has been conducted to find out various lesions, which can be safely and effectively treated through ureteroscope. We have performed 537 uretroscopies in 508 patients to provide definitive treatment in ureteric stones (518), ureteric strictures (10), urinary fistula (4), retroperitoneal fibrosis (2), ureteric ligation (1) and for removal of encrusted DJ stents (2). There were 358 male and 150 female patients with a mean age of 37.8 years. We had complete success with ureteroscopy alone in 903% of cases. In 7.5% of cases partial success was achieved, as we had to perform Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for large stone fragments in addition to intracorporeal pneumatic lithotripsy applied through ureteroscope. In 2.2% of cases, either there was inability to reach the site of lesion or endoscopic surgical procedure failure. Open surgery or percutaneous nephrostomy had to be performed in these patients. The overal complication rate was 5.4%. In our experience ureteroscopy has provided successful treatment in 97.8% of cases. It can be used safely and effectively for these new indications.
