Anxiety and depression in patients with artificial limb replacement.

Background: To assess the frequency of anxiety and depression and its relationship with sociodemographic variables among physically disabled patients with artificial limb replacement. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study 100 consecutive patients of both sexes older than 13 years with artificial limb replacement were included. Participating patients underwent detailed assessment which included demographic profile and assessment of anxiety and depression by applying hospital anxiety and depression scale. Results: Most of patients were middle age males, rural residents, married, unemployed, educated till middle class, lower limb amputees and were wearing prosthesis for less than one year. Majority of our patients were clinically anxious (74%) and depressed (61%). Regarding relationship of anxiety and depression with sociodemographic profile the anxiety and depression was common in all variables except in teenagers in which majority were not depressed. p- value of significance (<0.05) was found non significant in all the variables. Conclusion: Mean anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher among physically disabled patients with artificial limb replacement.
