Level of knowledge, attitude and practice of contraception among women of reproductive age group.

Objective: To determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of contraception among women of reproductive age group. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in the department of Gynaecology/obstetrics, Naseer Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from July 2008 to June 2009. It was descriptive, cross sectional study, which included 500 women in reproductive age group (20-45 years) visiting the Gynaecology OPD. Relevant information was recorded on a pre-designed questionnaire for knowledge, attitude and practice, prepared in accordance to the objectives of the study. Results: Mean age of the respondents was 29 + 9.8 years. Through the application of a structured questionnaire good knowledge about contraception was observed in 37.6%, average in 47.2% and bad in 15.2% of the respondents. Positive attitude was recorded in 65% while 67% reported positive practice for any type of contraceptive method. Most of the women having good knowledge, positive attitude and positive practice were in the age group >25 years. Conclusion: The level of knowledge and practice of contraception was satisfactory in our study. In addition to this majority of the respondents had positive attitude towards contraception.
