J Med Sci Jan ;20(1):41-4.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of coronary artery ectasia in patients undergoing coronary angiography. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 164 patients admitted in cardiology unit Hayatabad Medical Complex from April 2009 to October 2009 who had coronary angiography. Patients were labeled as having ectatic vessels if coronary arteries had a luminal dilation exceeding 1.5-fold the diameter of the normal adjacent arterial segment on angiogram. Results: A total of 164 patients was included in the study. Of these, 116 (70.7%) were male and 48(29.3%) were female. The mean age was 32.8 years + 10.36SD. Coronary artery ectasia was seen in 19(11.6%) patients. 15(78.9%) patients had involvement of the right coronary artery. The male to female ratio was 2.42:1. Majority were young subjects in the age range of 20-40 years. Co-existent obstructive coronary artery disease was noticed in 17(89.5%) patients. Conclusion: Coronary artery ectasia, an incidental angiographic finding, was more common in males of younger age group. Right coronary artery was involved in majority of patients and there was higher co-existence of coronary artery disease.
