Frequency of malignancy in cervical lymphadenopathy.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of malignancy in cervical lymphadenopathy. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was carried out at departments of ENT Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar and DHQ Hospital, Haripur over a period of 2 years from March, 2006 to February, 2008. A total of 97 cases were included. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) and lymph node biopsy were done in patients who presented with cervical lymphadenopathy. Results: Out of 97 patients, thirty eight patients (39.4%) showed malignancy. Nineteen (50%) had metastatic carcinoma, 7 (18.4%) Hodgkin’s disease, 7 (18.4%) diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma and 5 (18.2%) had non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Conclusion: This study concludes that metastatic carcinoma is one of the common cause of malignant cervical lymphadenopathy followed by lymphoma.
