Late failure in the femoral neck of a total hip arthroplasty a case study.
J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;26(1):48-9.

Patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty face many complications in which deep venous thrombosis is the most common complication. The rarest complication is hip prosthetic fracture with incidence of approximately 0.27%. In this case study, a late failure in the femoral neck of a total hip arthroplasty is presented. Initially it was thought that the fracture might be due to a material defect but an analysis of the stem material concluded that the fracture was caused by fatigue. The rate of total hip replacements in Denmark is 6302 per year (2002). The total complication rate is 20 % (4) with deep venous thrombosis being the most frequent. The least common complication is hip prosthetic fracture with an incidence of approximately 0.27 % (3). A stem fracture can be due to a material defect, corrosion, impingement or fatigue. Informed consent was obtained from the patient concerning publication of the case.
