Evaluation and acceptability of arthroscopy of knee under local anesthesia.

Objective : To evaluate usefulness and acceptability of the procedure for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Study Design: Case series. Place and Duration of Study: During calendar years of 2010 and 2011 at Department of Orthopaedic surgery, Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi. Patients and Methods: In 100 cases, Knee arthroscopy was done without tourniquet under local anesthesia. Most of patients 60 out of 100 were given 5mg of diazepam and 30 required additional analgesia in the form of 5mg nelbin. Results: There were few difficulties noted to examine the knee like patient apprehension and pain of pricks for local anesthesia, for intra-articular and portal sites. Conclusion: The study support that knee arthroscopy under local anesthesia is reliable and safe however it cannot be alternative to conventional procedure under spinal or general anesthesia and tourniquet control.
