J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;24(2):103-5.

Objective : To find out the efficacy of tranexamic acid in reducing blood loss during hip fracture surgery. Study Design: Comparative clinical study. Place and Duration of Study: Civil hospital Karachi; Between January 2011 to December 2012. Material and Methods: Patients admitted with intertrochanteric femoral fractures and underwent fixation were included and divided into two groups by convenience sampling. One group received tranexamic acid in the post-operative period while the other group served as a control without tranexamic acid. Blood loss was estimated in the drain during post-operative period. Results: Sixty patients were included in the study after taking informed consent. Thirtypatients received tranexamic acid and showed a decrease in blood loss (mean=126 ± 65 ml).Patients in group 2 who did not receive tranexamic acid had mean blood loss of 243 ± 148 ml (there was significant difference between two groups with p<0.001). No complication related to drug was observed. Conclusion:Tranexamic acid appears to reduce the blood loss during hip surgery thereby decreasing the need of blood transfusion.
