Evaluation of results of immediate hip spica in children of 2-10 years.

Objectives: To evaluate the results of immediate hip spica in children age 2-10 years in terms of union, malunion and limb length discrepancy. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, District Teaching Hospital, Sargodha over a period of one year from July 2010 to July 2011. Study Design: Descriptive case series Patients and Methods: This study was carried out in the Orthopaedic department of DHQ Teaching Hospital, Sargodha over a period of one year from July 2010 to July 2011. Sample size was 70-patients. Both males and females ware included in this study with age range was 2-10 years. All patients were admitted through accidents and emergency departments. Patients with severe soft tissues swelling were kept on preliminary traction for about one week. Data was interpreted in terms of malunion and shortening. Results: In this study, total of 70-patients were included. Out of 70-patients 54 (77.1%) were males and 16 (22.9%) were females. Male to female ratio was 3.4:1. Right side was involved in 30 (42.8 %) patients. Mean angulations on anterioposterior radiograph was 6.4 degree while on lateral x-rays it was 10.57 degrees. Malunion was present in 8 (11.4%) patients. Conclusion: Immediate hip spica cast application is safe and effective method for treatment of closed fameral shaft fractures in children age below 8 years.
