J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;23(2):89-94.

Objective: To compare the conventional pyodine dressing with honey dressing, in terms of recovery time and outcome, in diabetic foot ulcers. Study Design: Randomized control trial Place and Duration of Study: Orthopedic ward, district headquarter and teaching hospital Bannu from September 2009 to December 2010. Material and Method: All Wegner's grade I-IV, unilateral diabetic foot ulcer patients with age less than 70 years, presented to the out-patients', emergency departments and referred from medical units were admitted and their blood sugar profile, cardiac and renal status were investigated. Patients were assigned to group A and B randomly (60 cases in each group). Each group were treated with daily conventional Pyodine dressing and Honey dressing respectively, and recorded their recovery time, outcomes during the 10 weeks follow up periods. The data was analyzed by using the statistical software, SPSS version 16®. Results :A total of 137 patients were registered, 17 cases were excluded due to more than 70 years of age or either fails to make follow-up. Total of 120 cases were considered with mean age 54.32 ± 15.68 years and male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Recovery was found 3.217 times quicker in the Group B (Honey Dressing) as compared with the group A (conventional Pyodine dressing) (95% confidence interval 1.526.79, P = 0.002). Healing was 2.399 times higher with honey dressing as compared with pyodine (95% confidence interval 1.0335.567, P = 0.039). Conclusion: Honey dressing is more effective than conventional Pyodine dressing in terms of recovery time in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcer and further multicenter studies are suggested to prove its effectiveness in detail.
