Proximal femoral geometry of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (KPK) population.
J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;23(2):71-4.

Objective: The objective of study was to evaluate osteometric features of proximal femor in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa population and to establish a database for future studies. Place and Duration of study: This study was conducted at Department of Orthopedic surgery Postgraduate Medical Institute Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar from September 2006 to December 2009. Study Design: Descriptive study Material and methods: We conducted prospective morpho metric measurements of proximal femoral anatomy on conventional radiograms of 100 adult femora of KPK individuals, , who did not have any developmental bone abnormality. Measurements were made according to the parameters defined by Noble et al.6 For comparison, we used morphometric data reported on Western Results: There were total one hundred patients. Minimum age was 20 years, maximum was 90 and median age was 55. Male patients were 67while female were 33. Hip-axis-length (HAL) was 112mm maximum, 70mm minimum and mean 86mm, Neck Shaft Angle of femur (NSA) was1450, 1200 and 1340, Femoral neck diameter (FND) was 62mm, 44mm and 54, Angle of Wiberg was 830, 280 and 40.630 and femoral neck length was 45mm, 15 mm and 30.77mm. Conclusion: Our data revealed diverse features of femoral geometry in KPK population compared to Western populations. These differences should be taken into account in the design and development of hip prostheses.
