Pattern and severity of limb injuries in victims of road traffic accidents attending tertiary care public sector hospital.

Objective: The study was conducted to find out the pattern and severity of limb injuries sustained in road traffic accidents and it would help in organizational management plan.Study Design: Retrospective study. Place and Duration of Study: Orthopaedic Unit 1, CHK, DUHS From January 2009 to January 2010. Study Design: Prospective descriptive. Patient and Methods: It is a prospective descriptive study conducted on 837 road traffic accident victims at the Orthopaedic Unit I from January 2009 to January 2010.All those patients who sustained limb injuries in road traffic accidents were included. Pattern and severity of injuries were recorded. Results: Majority of subjects were between 14 to 58 years (68.2%) and males (71.3%). Maximum number of cases were motor bike riders (76.4%) followed by public transport passengers 107 (12.8%), pedestrians 53 (6.3%) private vehicles drivers 27 (3.2%). 68 % had only limb injuries while 32% had associated head, pelvis/ spine & thoraco-abdominal injuries. Conclusions: Motor bikes riders were mostly involved in RTA. Lowe limb was mostly involved.Road safety education program should be instituted. Separate tracks for motor bikes could reduced incidents of injuries.
