Bone healing index measurement in distraction osteogenesis.
J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;22(2):124-8.

Objective:Is to observe the problems faced during measurement of bone healing index in different conditions and to help the fellow colleagues to overcome the problems during the distraction osteoegnesis. Study Design: The study is comparative because the bone healing index in our patients will be compared with the studies carried out elsewhere in the world. Place of Study: TThe study was conducted In the Department of Orthopedics Rawalpindi Medical College Rawalpindi ,DHQ Hospital Rawalpindi. Patients & Methods: 46 patients were studied having intercalary segmental defect due to bone loss secondary to, defect created after tumor surgery, bone debridement in chronic osteomyelitis and in patient with limb length discrepancy. These patients were treated by Illizarov technique using principle of tension stress and distraction osteogenesis both Illizarov ring fixator and AO external fixator with distraction /compression assembly were used the patients included in the study had close follow up of 1-3 years after surgery. Results: during course of our study it was observed that bone healing index is different in different patients in distraction osteogenesis in different age groups with difference in their bone pathology. Conclusion: Intercalary segmental defects treated by using Illizarov technique has excellent outcome and resulted that bone healing index is different in different patients in different conditions by using the same technique.
