Evaluation of different modalities of treatment in Colles’ fractures.
J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;22(1):75-81.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of doing this study was to evaluate our results with the use of (i) Orthofix External-fixator (ii) Percutaneous pinning and (iii) Buttress-T plate devices in our patients with comminuted displaced unstable Colles’ fractures and compare them with commonly practiced conservative method (casting). STUDY DESIGN: A prospective descriptive study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Department of Orthopaedic Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro from September 2004 to December 2007. SUBJECT AND METHODS: 74 fractures in 74 patients were included in the study. Patients were allocated into four treatment groups. In group-I 51 patients were included and who had close reduction with application of a forearm cast. 14 patients in group-II had closed reduction and application of pinning Orthofix. Group-III comprised seven patients who had close reduction & stabilization with percutaneous pinning. Group-IV had open reduction and internal fixation with a small fragment A.O Buttress T-plate. The average time of follow-up was 20.2 weeks RESULTS: The final functional assessment results were excellent in 30 (40.5%) cases, good in 28 (37.8%) cases, fair in 11 (14.9%) cases, poor in 5 (6.75%) CONCLUSION: All the undisplaced and minimally displaced stable fracture of distal radius can be treated conservatively and satisfactory results can be achieved.
