Efficacy gamma nail in management of pertrochantric fractures of femur.

OBJECTIVE: Of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical outcome of traumatic subtrochanteric fractures fixed with long gamma nail with particular emphasis on our experience of surgical techniques. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive prospective study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: This multicenter study was conducted between January 2007 to June 2009 with main center at Peoples Medical College Hospital. PATIENTS & METHODS: Eighty five patients suffering from pertrochantric fractures were treated by gamma nails. Five patients were lost to follow up while remaining eighty patients followed for one year RESULTS: Evaluated by Kyle’s criteria and rated excellent in 42 patients, good in 28 patients, fair in 06 patients and poor in 04 patients. Only one patient got a fracture during surgery. Five patients got infection. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that long gamma nail is a reliable effective implant especially for unstable pertrochanteric fractures, leading to high rate of bone union and minimal soft tissue damage.
