Outcome of austin-moore hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with fracture neck of femur.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To determine outcome of Austin-Moore hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with fracture neck of femur in terms of mortality and morbidity during one year period postoperatively. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. SETTING: Orthopaedic department of Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi. DURATION OF STUDY: November 2007 to February 2009. SUBJECT & METHODS: 30 elderly patients of 60 years or above with fracture neck of femur were consecutively selected. The patients were treated by Austin-Moore hemiarthroplasty during a period of 17 months. The morbidity and mortality was observed for a period of one year postoperatively. Data was analyzed using SPSS RESULTS: The mean age of our patients was 74.4±7.3 years. 13 (43.3%) patients in the study were male and 17 (56.7%) were female. Fall was the commonest mechanism of injury (83%). Garden type-III, 17 (56.6%) was the most common type of fractures. Most of the patients had some comorbids (83%). Only morbidity was in the form of acetabular erosion in one patient (3.3%). While there was no dislocation, infection or other complications postoperatively. The mortality rate was 23%. CONCLUSION: Functional outcome of Austin-Moore in elderly patients with fracture neck of femur were excellent to good in most of the cases. Morbidity in terms of acetabular erosion. Dislocation and infection is rear. The mortality during one year was found to be high but it was due to systemic medical comorbidities.
