Role of Cytomegalovirus in reproductive losses among women of child bearing age in our population.
Ann Abbasi Shaheed Hosp Karachi Med Dent Coll Jan ;4:148-51.

We studied 600 women of child bearing age to determine the incidence of Cytomegalovirus infection. All serum samples were screened for IgM and IgG types of antibodies specific to Cytomegalovirus by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Out of 600 cases screened 39 (12.5%) were found seropositive for IgM and 138 (23.0%) for IgG. In women with history of abortion (reproductive losses) out of 312 cases 30 (9.6%) were seropositive for IgM and 96 (30.8%) for IgG. In women with normal reproductive performance, out of 288 cases tested 09 (3.1 %) were seropositive for IgM and 42 (13.5%) IgG type of antibodies. IgM seropositivity decreases with increase in age and it is found more in younger age group. On the contrary, IgG type of antibodies incidence increases with increase in age. Highest number of seropositive cases were found in elder persons. Highest number of seropositive cases both for IgM and IgG were from threatened abortion subgroup. It can be safely affirmed from the present study that there are sizeable reproductive losses due to cytomegaloviral infection. Regular screening of women during pregnancy is advisable to thwart serious consequences caused by Cytomegalovirus.
