Comparison of duration of labour & outcome in women of different parities.

Current obstetric practice entails universal use of partograms in labour wards for all women in labour. To compare the duration of labour and outcome in our populations, the partograms of 970 women with singleton pregnancy and cephalic presentation admitted to the labour ward at term were studied. The duration of three stages of labour was recorded in women of different parities. The mean total duration of labour was 9.98 hours in primipara, 5.95 hours in multipara and 5.71 hours in the grandmultipara. The overall. caesarean section rate in these 970 patients was 5.25% and the weight of the newborn infant ranged from a mean of 2. 7 Kg for primi to 3. 01 kg, for multi and 3.1 kg in the grandmultipara.
