Outcomes of pericardiectomy in tertiary teaching hospital of khyber pakhtunkhwa.

Objective: The aim of this study was to find outcomes of patients undergoing Pericardiectomy in a tertiary care teaching hospital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Methodology: This was a Descriptive cross sectional study performed in Cardiovascular Department Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Data was collected from October 2009 to October 2014 with sample size of 103. Sampling technique was non probability consecutive. All patients with constrictive pericarditis were included in the study. Results : Total 50 patients were studied in period of 5 years from October 2009 to October 2014.Out of total 30 (60%) patients were male. Mean age of the study population was 48± 12 years. Tuberculosis was the major cause of constrictive pericarditis in these patients. Mortality associated with pericardectomy was 10%. Morbidity and mortality was mostly related to low output stat with or with out right heart failure. Conclusion:-Pericardectomy is associated with high mortality and morbidity in spite of advances in pre and post surgical care.
