Undernutrition is quite common in surgical patients. Surgeons have been at the forefront in practically all the major developments in nutritional support down through the ages. Since long it has been realised that poor nutritional state as evidenced by preoperative weight loss is associated with a higher postoperative morbidity and mortality. Presence of weight loss occurring in association with evidence of physiological impairment has been identified as carrying a significantly worst prognosis in terms of postoperative morbidity, such as infective sequelae. In this article, various aspects of TPN in surgical patients is reviewed and discussed.
