Major lymphocyte subpopulations in a group of healthy Pakistani adults.
Rawal Med J Jan ;27(3):3-5.

This study was carried out on a group of healthy Pakistani adults (n=33) for determining the major lymphocyte sub populations by flowcytometric analysis. Peripheral blood samples were collected aseptically in EDTA containers. A panel of monoclonbal antibodies to the CD markers of different lymphocyte subsets was used, for quantitative analysis of subpopulation by flowcytometry. The results were compared with figures from Caucasian population and with a group from Saudi Arabia. Total lymphocyte count was higher in our subjects, compared to Caucasian population. B lymphocyte, T lymphocyte and NK cell counts were higher in our subjects and in Saudi Arabian group compared to the Caucasian population. CD4: CD8 ratio was less in our subjects as well as in Saudi Arabian group compared to the Caucasian population figures. The difference of environment and living conditions, degree of exposure to infectious agents and genetic and racial factors are implicated as the determinants of the NK cells, lymphocytes and their subsets. These findings point to the need of establishing reference ranges for lymphocyte subsets in our population.
