Frequency of fungal infection in the nasal polyposis patients undergoing polypectomy in a tertiary care unit.

Objective: To determine the frequency of fungal infection in nasal polyposis patients undergoing polypectomy in a tertiary care ENT unit. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted in the department of ENT, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. A total of 60 patients with nasal polyposis were enrolled. Patients with sinonasal malignancy, diabetes, and pregnant or lactating women were excluded from study. All patients were operated and specimens of polypectomies had fungal culture, direct microscopy and histopathology. Data were microscopy and histopathology. Data were analysed using SPSS version 20. Results: The mean age of patients was 35+11.8 year with median of 32 years. Out of 60 patients, 40 (66.7%) were male to female ratio of 2:1, 16 (26.7%) patients were housewives followerd by government servants; 15 (25.0%). Of fungi. No significant differences were seen in terms of age, gender, occupation, socioeconomic status and use of intranasal corticosteroids in patients with or without fungal polyps. Conclusion: The frequeny of fungal infection among the patients of nasal polyposis in was 10%. It is utmost important to determine the frequency of fungal infection in nasal polyposis for better management of nasal polyposis. (Rawal Med J 201;40:428-432).
