What mothers know about Diarrhea, The Dreadful: A survey in Rawalpindi.

Background: Diarrhea is one of the major causes of deaths of more than one third of 1200 children less than ve years of age in Pakistan (1).The population in rural areas of developing countries is not much aware about diarrhea and its treatment. The mothers need to be aware of the danger signs of diarrhea, in which they should immediately call or contact a doctor (2). Objective: To examine the level of knowledge about diarrhea in mothers having children, ve years and below in selected area of Rawalpindi. Method: The cross sectional survey study was carried out in Dhoke Ratta, a small but populated place in Rawalpindi in March 2013. Mothers of children, ve years and below was the targeted population. Questionnaire form was used to scrutinize the knowledge, mothers posses to identify, deal and to treat diarrhea at home. Results: Total 25 questions were asked from each mother. The results showed varied answers from all the mothers. Some were aware about the treatment but others were not. Some knew about its diagnosis and cure while others did not know and could not answer the questions. Conclusion: The mothers did not have enough knowledge about diarrhea including factors like how to diagnose, cure or treat it. Keywords: Diarrhea, diarrhea treatment, diarrhea knowledge.
