Knowledge, attitude and practice on determinants and transmission of Dengue fever: a study among urban and peri - urban residents of a Metropolitan city in Bangladesh.

Background:The objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice concerning dengue fever and its transmission among the residents of Chittagong city , Bangladesh. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out among three hundred and forty three randomly selected residents of urban and peri-urban regions of the city in November, 2012 using a pretested and self- administered questionnaire. Results:It was found that only 1.5% the respondents were aware that dirty environment provides the breeding ground for dengue fever , 0.6% knew that direct contact is required for dengue to spread from one person to another, and that only 7.3% knew that mosquitoes transmit dengue infection bites only during day time. The study revealed 50.1% had ambivalent attitude towards dengue fever , and there was signicant association between age and practice; that only 21.31% of the respondents has adequate knowledge about of dengue prevention (p=0.031); 81.01% has poor practice due to poor knowledge (p<0.000) and that 72.76% of them has poor practice regarding dengue fever though they had proper information (p<0.000). Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of organizing public education programs to better protect the people from the outbreak of dengue by increasing their level of Knowledge so that they can attain positive attitude and adopt desired behavioral changes.
