Assessment of services provided by lady health workers' (LHWs) at primary health centers at district Quetta, Balochistan.

Background: The aim of the study was to nd the factors affecting the services of LHWsand to give recommendations to enhance the access and coverage of primary health care services at District Quetta, Balochistan. Methods: Descriptive Cross-Sectional survey was conducted from October to December 2013. The Lady Health workers of district Quetta (n=209) were included in this study. Results:The median age was 28 years (Range 18-42). The socioeconomic status of the LHWs was reported poor.Maternal health services were provided by only 7% of the LHWs. Job satisfaction was 53%. Problems confronted during mobility in different areas were 35%. All of the LHWs reported that they are not provided with essential drugs and they feel ashamed when families ask them about routine medicines. All of them reported that they don't have sufcient printed materials regarding their guidance and supervisor doesn't visit their home on regular basis. 78% LHWs reported that they often convey the problems to their supervisors but they have not solved a single problem. 95% told that they don't have sufcient supply of materials. 99% LHWs told that they don't have any restriction from their families about this job. Conclusions: It is recommended that socioeconomic status and education level of LHWs need to be improved. Supply chain of health related equipment, medicine and other materials should be maintained.
