One-Week therapy with Omeprazole, Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin for eradication of Helicobacter Pylori Infection.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of one week treatment with Omeprazole, Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection in peptic ulcer patients in Pakistan. Design: Prospective study. Place and Duration of Study: Tertiary care referral center. Study duration was from 1997-2000. Subject and Methods: One hundred consecutive patients with suspected peptic ulcer disease were prospectively enrolled for the study. After initial endoscopy and diagnosis histopathologically, patients were treated with Omeprazole 20 mg BID, Clarithromycin 500 mg BID and Amoxicillin one gm BID for 7 days. Compliance was monitored and patients underwent follow-up upper GI endoscopy at 6-8 weeks and eradication of Helicobacter pylori and ulcer healing were noted. Results: Of 100 patients, 78 patients showed eradication of the organism, 22 patients still showed presence of organism. The ulcer had healed in 94 % patients at second endoscopy. Conclusion: Seven days triple therapy with Omeprazole, Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin has given satisfactory results with eradication rate of 78 % with excellent compliance and optimal tolerability.
