Perinatal and Maternal outcome in Ventouse versus Forceps delivery.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(6):345-7.

Objective: To compare the differences in maternal and perinatal outcome in ventouse versus forceps delivery. Design: Randomized comparative clinical trial. Place and Duration of Study: Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Subjects and Methods: Fifty out of 931 consecutive patients were randomly selected either to forceps delivery (Group I) or ventouse extraction (Group II). Patients included in the study were those with singleton pregnancies, a cephalic presentation and gestation of 35 completed weeks. Results: The overall success rate was similar with both instruments. Twenty-seven patients delivered by ventouse and 23 by forceps and the success rate was 96.30% for vacuum and 95.65% for forceps. There was one failure in each category which was later on delivered by caesarean section. The 10-point Apgar score was used to assess the condition and prognosis of newborn infants. There was no marked difference in 1 and 5 minutes Apgar scores. Conclusion: It is concluded that the outcome following delivery with the ventouse was not markedly different from that with obstetric forceps in terms of neonatal and maternal morbidity.
