An experience of laparoscopic appendectomy.

Background: With the advent of laparoscopic surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been done widely and an established practice for symptomatic gall stones. On the other hand, it is still not clear whether laparoscopic appendectomy is an appropriate surgical approach to acute appendicitis or not. Th e objective of this study was to know the outcome of laparoscopic appendectomy in terms of severity of post operative pain, port site infection and intra abdominal collection and hospital stay and conversion to open appendectomy and its causes. Materials and Methods: Th is descriptive cross sectional study was carried out at surgical department, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from September, 2013 to September, 2014 comprising of 30 patients (15-30 years) who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. Th e data was entered in standardized proforma and analyzed on SPSS 16. Results: Th ere were 17 (56.67%) males and 13 (43.33%) females with an overall mean age of 20.78 years ± 4.99SD. Th e mean hospital stay and mean post operative pain on visual analogue Score were 3.00 days ± 0.99SD and 4.50 ± 1.30SD respectively. Th e port site infection was in 4 (13.33%) patients, intraabdominal collection in 1 (3.33%) and bleeding from base of appendix 1 (3.33%) patient. Th e conversion to open appendectomy was in 5 (16.67%) and causes were bleeding from base of appendix (1 (3.33%)), diffi cult anatomy (2 (6.67)), adhesion and suspicion of bowel injury in (1 (3.33%)) patient each. Conclusion: Laparoscopic Appendectomy is a safe procedure with regard to complications, hospital stay and postoperative pain.
