Treatment of Postoperative Pupillary Membranes with Nd: Yag Laser.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;12(1):8-12.

In a retrospective study from April, 1992 to December, 1994, we treated 72 cases of post-surgical pupillary membranes with Nd: YAG laser. All the cases had undergone cataract surgery. Most of the cases had been operated on in the peripheral rural areas. Time since cataract surgery ranged from 48 hours to 18 months. Ages of the patients ranged from 4 years to 82 years. A slit-lamp-mounted 0-switched Nd: YAG laser was used to perform membranotomies. Energy level required ranged from 1.5 mj to 18 mj/pulse with an average of 21 shots. Complications included transient rise in 10P in 28 cases (39%), streak hyphaema in 17 cases (24%), damage to intraocular lens implants in 3 of the 16 pseudophakic eyes (4.16%), disturbance of anterior hyalold face in 4 cases (5.5%), anterior uveitis in 4 cases (5.5%), recurrence of membrane in 2 cases (2.75%) and retinal detachment in one case (1.37%). Follow-up period ranged from a minimum of six months to a maximum of two years. Improvement in visual acuity was noted in 63 cases (87.5%) with an average increase of three lines on Snellen`s chart.
