Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Risk Profiles of Urban and Rural Population: A Comparative Analysis.

Objectives: To assess whether risk profile of CHD patients living in urban and rural areas differs on factors like age, education, occupation, monthly family income, living; joint or nuclear, family history of CHD, self reported hypertension and diabetes, smoking status, physical activity (hours per day and number of times per week) and waist hip ratio. Another objective of the study was to find out whether urban and rural CHD population differs on psychological risk factors like depression, anxiety and stress. Method: Cross-sectional research design was used to conduct the present study. Patients from rural and urban living areas, diagnosed with acute AMI (both male and females), age ranged 35 to 55 years were included in the study through purposive sampling technique. Self constructed form was used for intake of demographic information like self reported diabetes, hypertension, and family history of CHD, smoking status, physical activity and waist hip ratio (WHR). To gather information on psychological risk factors Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DAS), short version 21 items was used Results: point towards difference on demographic variables, presence of diabetes, hypertension, and family history of CHD, level of physical activity, WHR, anxiety and stress between rural and urban residents. Conclusion: Results of the present study will help to lay grounds for public health planning; primary and secondary prevention programs by keeping in mind differences in risk factors for AMI, prevalent in rural and urban population.
