Conjunctival Growths.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;15(4):165-8.

A prospective 2-year study was planned to determine the frequency of various types of conjunctival growths in patients who reported to the Department of Ophthalmology, Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Bahawalpur. The patients ages ranged from 8 years to 72 years (77%) were between the ages of 20 and 60 years). The eye involvement was 50.91% and 49.09% for the right and the left eye, respectively. 65.45% were male and 34.55% were female patients. All the growths were excised with adequate healthy margins and subjected to histopathology. Among the growths 87.27% were diagnosed as pterygium, while 12.73% of conjunctival growths excised included 1 case each of capillary haemangioma, carcinoma in situ, dermolipoma and moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. There were 2 cases of conjunctival nevus. Although pterygium was the most common conjunctival growth the occurrence of uncommon growths highlights the fact that initial treatment with excision of adequate healthy margins should prevent recurrence and offers a better prognosis. Follow-up period ranged between 6 and 22 months.
