Efficacy of Latanoprost in Lowering intraocualr Pressure in Patients With Open-Angle Glaucoma.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;16(4):172-6.

Purpose of Study: To evaluate the efficacy of 0.005% latanoprost in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) given as monotherapy and as an additive top-blocker. Material and Methods: This ongoing study was carried out at the Glaucoma Research Center, Eye Unit I, Services Hospital, Lahore and Husnain Medical Center, Lahore, from Feb. 1999 to June 2000. In this trial, efficacy of 0.005% latanoprost was evaluated in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma whose intraocular pressure (IOP) was above the individual target level despite the maximal antiglaucoma therapy. 0.005% latanoprost was added once a day in the evening. One hundred thirteen eyes of 62 patients were studied. Patients were divided into two groups. In Group A, 35 eyes of 18 patients received 0.005% latanoprost as monotherapy once a day. In Group e, 78 eyes of 44 patients whose IOP was above the individual target level were treated with 0.005% latanoprost as an additive top-blockers. Results: In group A the mean IOP was 24.49 mmHg before treatment with latanoprost. Overall mean reduction in IOP induced by latanoprost was 25.67% at the end of 1st month and 26.25%, 26.49%, 26.28% and 26.12% at the end of 3rd month, 61h month, 9th month and 1 year, respectively. In group 6, the mean 10P with B-blockers was 24.48 mmHg before the addition of latanoprost. Overall mean reduction in IOP Induced by latanoprost was 26.29% at the end of 1st month and 26.47%, 27.53%, 27.45% and 27.32% at the end of 3r° month, 6th month, 9th month and 1 year, respectively. A few patients had conjunctival hyperemia, itching, burning and foreign body sensation. These symptoms were mild and transient. Conclusion: Latanoprost 0.005% is a well tolerated and an effective ocular hypotensive agent that may provide significant reduction of IOP in patients with POAG. The reduction in IOP sustains through time.
