Incisional Hernia Repair: Comparison of Results with Mesh Repair and Suture Repair.

Objective: To compare results of Mesh repair and suture repair in patients of incisional hernia. Study Design: Quasi Experimental study. Place and Duration: This study was conducted at the Department of Urology and General Surgery, Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur from January 2003 to December 2008. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 patients from 18 to 70 years of age with incisional hernia were included. Patients with diseases which aggravate hernia formation or recurrence were excluded. The patients were randomized in two groups (Group A and Group B) with odds and even number method. Group A (n=30) was subjected to Mesh repair and Group B (n=30) incisional hernia was repaired with suture technique. Wound healing time, complications, hospital stay and rate of recurrence was noted and compared. Results: Male to female ratio in this study was 1:1.5.Mesh repair was found to have less complication than suture repair but there was insignificant difference in hospital stay. Patient satisfaction was superior in patients who has undergone mesh repair for their incisional hernias. Conclusion: Mesh repair is better technique for repair of incisional hernia, because it has less recurrence rate and more patient satisfaction.
