J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;7(2)8(1,2):552-5.

Benign germ cell tumours of the ovary are rare except benign cystic teratomas. These tumours are noted fir certain unique clinical syndromes eg; haemolytic anaemia, carcinoid syndrome and thyrotoxicosis. We report a case of immuno haemylotic anaemia related to benign cystic teratoma, (Dermoid cyst of ovary).

Case Report: A thirty years old woman was admitted with three months history of jaundice and symptoms of anaemia. There was no history of neonatal or episodic jaundice or affected family members and no relation to any particular drugs, infections or dietary constituents or exposure to cold. On physical examination, she was anaemic and moderately jaundiced. No other physical abnormality was detected except a cystic right ovarian mass which was confirmed as dermoid cyst measuring 8.1 x 7.9 cms on ultrasound, which also disclosed gallstones and spleen at the upper limit of normal. Haematological examination revealed Haemoglobin 3.2 gm%, Reticuloytes 50% Spherocytosis+ + Polychromasia+ + and nucleated red cells were present. TLC, DLC and Platelets were within normal limits. Serum Bilirubin was 12 mg (unconjugated 10.60 mg% and conjugated 1.40 mg%) direct anti globulin Test (Direct coomb`s Test) was positive. Other haematological and biochemical profiles were normal. In the light of above haematological findings the diagnosis of immuno-haemolytic anaemia was made.
