Stressful Life Events among Internally Displaced Persons of KPK after Military Operation.

Objective: To assess the stressful life events among the “Internally Displaced Persons” of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) in Pakistan, in relation to the gender, educational and economic resources. Material & Method: Survey research design was used in this quantitative research. Sample consisted of 300 internally displaced persons (146 males, and 154 females) from Save the children (NGO). They were belonged to different areas of FATA and PATA. Duration of study was over a month. Convenient sampling was used for selection of participant. Sample was not restricted to age, education and economical status during selection of participants. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were set. Duration of study was three months. Informed consent was taken. Impact of Event Scale Revised – IES-R was used as research instrument. Data was analyzed on SPSS, and results were computed in frequencies and percentages. Results: It was observed that majority of people were illiterate, females were more illiterate as compared to males. Females scored significantly higher as compared to males in levels of intrusion, hypersarousal and impact of event scale scores. Results indicate non-significant difference in level of avoidance with reference to gender. It was observed that loss of job in male IDPs were 35.6%, loss of income 41.7%, loss of propriety 61%, loss of crops 72.6%, loss of cattle 66%, loss of business 29.5%, loss of livelihood 17.8%, devaluation of propriety4.8% destruction of tourist industry2%, none 4.8%, any other 11%. Losses of female IDPs are observed as loss job 12.7%, loss of income 45%, loss of propriety 66%, loss of crops 87%, loss of cattle 81%, loss of business 29%, loss of livelihood 23%, devaluation of propriety 12%, destruction of tourist industry 0.7%, none 0%, any other 15.6%. It indicates that ratio of loss of job is high in males and other factors are high in females. Results indicate that male have to face more social and political problems as compared to females. Conclusion: It was concluded that females have high level of personal distress as compared to males. The present study also yields that IDPs have to face a lot of problems in resettled areas. The observation of present study revealed low literacy level especially in females.
