J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(8):458-60.

Objective: To see clinical presentation, extra-intestinal manifestations and complications of ulcerative colitis in our setup and to compare these results with western countries. Design: A retrospective study. Place and Duration of Study : From 1982 to 1999 (18 years) at PGMI/LRH/HMC, Peshawar, Pakistan. Patients and Methods: Five hundred and fifty patients presenting with bloody diarrhoea were included in this study. All laboratory investigations including colonoscopy and biopsy were done to confirm the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. Stool microscopy and cultures were done to exclude co-existing infection. The extent of disease was determined by colonoscopy and severity was assessed by the True-Love criterion. Results: Maximum number of patients were between 30-50 years of age. Male to female ratio was 4.5:1. Abdominal pain along with bloody diarrhoea was the most common presenting feature in 58 patients (92.30%). Colonoscopic assessment showed that left sided colitis was most common (54.50%). There were only a few extra-intestinal manifestations (2.18% patients). Conclusion: Clinical spectrum of ulcerative colitis in our population is similar to that reported from other countries.
