Surgical Audit of Cases Admitted at Surgical Unit I of Civil Hospital Karachi.

Objective: To perform the audit of all the cases admitted to surgical unit1 of Civil Hospital Karachi in the year of 2015. Study design: Cross-sectional study Place & Duration of study: Surgical Unit1 Civil Hospital Karachi Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective audit of all the cases admitted at Surgical Unit 1 Civil Hospital Karachi. The duration of the study was 1 month extended from 1st May 2016- 30th May 2016. Data was collected on a formed proforma which comprised of evaluating patient’s basic information/demography, mode of admission i.e. trauma and emergency/outpatient department/referred/transferred from another unit, management i.e. operation or conservative treatment, the outcome of management i.e. discharge/ referred/death, the presence of co - morbidities. The data was entered and analyzed on SPSS version19. Results: Out of total 615 admissions 54%(n=332) were males and 46% were females(n=283). The mean age of the patients was 38.59 with standard deviation of+/- 14.920. In the current study, 33.7% procedures were performed in an emergency while 66.3% were elective. The outcome of our study showed Exploratory laparotomy as commonest emergency procedure while cholecystectomy as the commonest elective procedure. Conclusion: We emphasize on bringing of audit systems at our hospitals and demand CPSP to promote audit awareness and its benefits. Moreover, we recommend the installation of computerized audit programs and sharing of patient’s database through it among different institutions to fill up the emptiness of lacking literature in this stream.
