A clinicopathological study of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis.

Objective: To see the clinical presentation, management and recurrence in our patients of Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2008 to 2015 at Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan and included all cases of IGM. Chart review and telephonic follow up was done and sign, symptom, treatment given and recurrence at one year were recorded. Results were analyzed using SPSS Version 16. Results: Total number of patients seen during the study period was 44. Mean age was 34.227±5.093 years. All presented with a unilateral disease, 36(81.8%) had a painful lump, 7(15.9%) with lump and skin changes and one(2.3%) case had a discharging sinus. 14 (31.8%) cases underwent incision and drainage, 30 (68.2%) had excision biopsy. Steroids were given in 17(38.6%) cases. Recurrence was seen in 3 (6.8%) cases. Conclusion: Granulomatous lobular mastitis is a rare, benign breast disease of reproductive age group. Increased awareness will improve the understanding as well as its management.
