Assessment of Dietary Habits of Patients Suffering From Kidney Stone Disease In Public Sector Teaching Hospitals of Peshawar.

Objective: To outline the dietary habits of patients suffering from kidney stone in our setup Study Design: A Cross Sectional Analytical study Place and Duration: In three Government Sector Hospitals of Peshawar from April – October 2012. Materials and Methods: A Cross Sectional Analytical study was conducted in three Government Sector Hospitals of Peshawar from April – October 2012. A sample of 75 admitted patients of age 15 - 60 years (both male and female) were selected using Simple Random Sampling. Weekly dietary habits for Beef, Rice, Calcium supplements, Leafy vegetables, whole wheat cereals, milk and milk products were analyzed using SPSS 17. Results: Out of 75 patients, 50 were male and 25 were female, with 25 patients aged 15 – 30 years, 27 aged > 30 - 45 years and 23 aged > 45 years - 60 years. Majority of patients had an average weekly intake of beef 0-2 times per week [60 % of patients, 45 out of 75] who have a concomitant weekly consumption of rice 0-2 times per week [62.7 % of patients. 47 out of 75] and calcium supplements < 4 times per week [90.7% of patients, 68 out of 75]. Female patients aged 15-30 years had the largest consumption of Milk and Milk products (0- 2 times per week), Leafy vegetables (0-2 times per week) and whole cereals (> 6 times per week). Male patients showed largest consumption of the above mentioned constituents in the age group of > 30 years - 45 years. Conclusion: Promotion of physical health and adoption of recommended dietary habits is the key to healthy living.
