Effectiveness of hematoma block in term of pain relief in distal radial fractures.
Rawal Med J Jan ;42(3):356-8.

Objective: To determine effectiveness of hematoma block in term of pain relief in reduction of distal radius fracture. Methodology: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 150 patients distal radius fracture. The patients were given 1.5% Xylocaine at the fracture hematoma site from the dorsal aspect. After five minutes the reduction and immobilization of the fracture was done. At the start of process of reduction, patient was asked about pain score on visual analogue scale Results. Out of 150 patients, the mean age was 53.23±11.44 years. 95 patients (63.7%) were female and 55 patients (33.3%) were male. The age group distribution was such that 58.00 % were between 40 to 59 year old, 30.7% were 60 to 80 year old and 17 % were between 20 to 39 year old. The total number of patients having pain less then 3 on visual analogue score was 128(85.3 %) and patients having pain 3 or more were 22 (14.7%). Conclusion: Hematoma block is safe, cost effective and effective in reducing pain during reduction of distal radius fracture.
