Development and validation of Depression Inventory for Amputees in Pakistan.
Rawal Med J Jan ;42(3):326-33.

Objectives: To develop an indigenous scale for the measurement of depression among amputees to be named as Depression Inventory for Amputees (DIA), determine factorial validity and internal consistency of DIA, and establish construct validity by finding correlation between DIA and Amputee Body-Image Scale (ABIS) and Self-Report Measure of Emotional Intelligence (SMERI). Methodology: The study was conducted in two parts. In the first part, a four-option scale was constructed and applied on a sample of 230 amputees. The second part was carried out on a sample of 100 amputees to ascertain the construct validity of the newly developed DIA. Results: Hierarchical Exploratory Factor Analysis yielded a 30-item DIA with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.88. A significantly positive correlation was found between DIA and ABIS, while significantly negative relationship was found between DIA and SMERI. Conclusion: DIA emerged as a reliable and valid self-report measure of depression among Pakistani amputees. It has a large scope of application in facilitating the development of psychological well being, and rehabilitation of amputees.
