Incidence of laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer at Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, Pakistan.

Objective: To explore the incidence of laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer at Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro. Methodology: This retrospective study was conducted at Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro from 2010 to 2014 and record of registered cancer cases was collected during five years. The data were computed to determine the incidence of laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer (LPC). Results: Total registered cancer cases were 7206; out of these, 682 cases were of laryngeal and pharyngeal cancer. Incidence of LPC was 9.46% comprising 35.7% females and 64.3% males with 1:1.8 female to male ratio. The year 2014 followed by 2013 and 2010 was observed with higher rate whereas 2011 showed low incidence. April following January among five years showeded increased incidence, on other hand November showed low incidence rate when compared to other months. Incidence of LPC was higher in males as contrast to females, in 2010. We found highest 71.31% in males and 40.45% in females with higher rate in 2012. Regarding age groups in years, 45-59 for males and 30-44 for females were common sufferers. Conclusion: overall incidence of LPC was 9.46% during 2010-2014 with males being more prone to develop LPC than females at Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro. The peak year for the presentation was 2014 followed by 2013, whereas, April followed by January were observed to be the peak months. The most affected age group in males was 45-59 years and 30-44 years in females.
