Research challenges for postgraduate residents in dentistry.
Pak Oral Dental J Jan ;36(4):683-7.

Research activity makes up an important aspect of postgraduate medical and dental training. Research promotes critical thinking, reasoning and rational decision making among the researchers. Quality research work requires a healthy research environment. In addition, a positive attitude of trainees towards undertaking and carrying out research cannot be overemphasized. However, not all residents are keen to carry out research along with their clinical training. This study aimed to assess the attitude of postgraduate residents towards research and to investigate the barriers preventing the residents from engaging in research. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using a self – administered questionnaire distributed to 115 postgraduate residents from seven dental institutes in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Lahore and five different dental specialties. Each questionnaire had five sections with questions aimed at collecting demographic data, data regarding attitudes of trainees towards research, barriers faced in conducting research during clinical training, productivity of residents in research and recommendations to improve research skills. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 21. Descriptive statistics were calculated. Majority (92%) of the residents had an overall positive attitude towards research. Most (91.5%) residents considered lack of appropriate knowledge and skill as the main barrier towards conducting research. Efforts need to be made by all postgraduate training institutes to facilitate postgraduate trainees in research so as to enhance their research efficiency.
