Prosthodontics rehabilitation for cleft palate patients.

The presence of cleft will affect the functional abilities and esthetic profile of the affected individuals. For oral rehabilitation of these patients multidisciplinary approach is essential. The role of Prosthodontist is equally important before and after surgical intervention. It was a descriptive type of study. The study was carried out in the Department of Prosthodontics, Hamdard University Dental Hospital, Karachi from September 2014 to September 2016. Total 22 patients were selected after taking consent by random sampling technique. The age range varies from 01 month to 45 years, among 22 patients 15 were female while 7 were males. Depending upon various factors like age, expectation of the patient, financial status, compliance of the patient, underlying soft and hard tissue, status of existing dentition, different type of prosthesis were fabricated. Feeding plate obturator was fabricated for three patients, while removable prosthesis was fabricated for 15 patients. Four patients were provided with fixed prosthesis. The early provision of prosthesis will result in better out come for these patients, there is a need to increase awareness regarding role of Prosthodontist during rehabilitation of cleft patients.
