A comparison between video and live demonstrations for teaching dental operative procedures.
Pak Oral Dental J Jan ;36(4):619-22.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of video demonstrations versus live demonstrations for teaching basic dental operative procedures. Seventy-two second-year male dental students were randomly assigned to the two groups. The students in group A (n = 36) attended live demonstrations performed by six faculty members, while those in group B (n = 36) watched video demonstrations. Both methods described identical steps involved in cavity preparation for class I amalgam restoration. Students in both groups were then asked to perform a cavity preparation on plastic teeth to evaluate their performance. The groups were then switched for a second procedure; cavity preparation for a class II amalgam restoration. Blind assessment was performed by two faculty members for the two groups in both the procedures. In the first procedure; the mean students’ score for cavity preparation was 7.95 for group A and 7.77 for group B. No significant difference was detected between the two groups (P = 0.924). For the second procedure; the mean scores were 7.63 and 7.80 again with no significant difference (P=0.647). It can be concluded that; for teaching dental operative procedures, video demonstrations are as effective as live demonstrations.
