Evaluation of Patients with Haematuria in a District General Hospital.

To evaluate the aetiology of haematuria and to investigate the incidence of significant clinical findings in patients presenting with asymptomatic microscopic haematuria. 371 cases were referred with haematuria. They included 240 males and 131 female with a mean age of 58 years (range 15-94 years). All the patients were investigated with urine analysis, urine culture, urine cytology, ultrasound / IVU and cystourethroscopy. Only neoplasms, calculi and vascular BHP were considered significant findings. 191 patients presented with gross haematuria (GH). Of these 86 patients (45%) showed significant pathology with the incidence of malignancy being 24%. 180 patients presented with microscopic haematuria (MH) and 23 patients (12.8%) had significant findings. The urinary tract cancer was found in 4 patients 2.2%.
